The new bill promises to take health care from between 11.8 and 17 million people according to the Associated Press. Our neighbors with salaries in the lower 20% are projected to have their taxes go up $700 a year while people who make 3 million a year will get $100,000 a year in tax breaks. The new bill allocates billions of taxpayer money for masked ICE, $30 billion for arrest and deportation.
What to do? This moment can feel overwhelming for people of conscience. Here are just a few ways to help your neighbors during this time of taking from the poor to help the extremely rich. 1. Hold a sign that supports your neighbors on a corner. Let people know you do not agree with ICE’s efforts to hurt families. Attend a protest if you can, or just stand with a sign. 2. Donate to food pantries and volunteer where you can. 3. Volunteer for campaigns that will protect New Jerseyans from the administration’s cruel autocracy. I will be volunteering for Mikie Sherrill who promises to stand up for New Jersey in the face of Trump’s assaults on our rights. 4. Take some time off your phone to go for a walk, talk to a friend, make something good to eat.
These are difficult times. Take care of yourselves and your neighbors.
