Masked, armed, unaccountable: Our ICE problem is growing

We have a problem in the United States. As I write this, there are groups of young men around the country riding in unmarked vehicles. They carry automatic weapons and wear bulletproof vests. They are usually in plain clothes with no identification. And they wear masks. They claim to be working for Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) but how would we know?

Their job as they describe it, is to remove all the criminal immigrants from the United States and deport them back to their home country. To accomplish this goal, they pull people from their homes or their jobs, take them off the streets or even remove them from court at their immigration hearings. They make almost all of these arrests without judicial warrants. Instead, they use what are called administrative warrants, which basically gives ICE the authority to arrest and detain anyone, anywhere, at any time. One reason they use administrative warrants and not judicial warrants, is that there simply are not enough immigrants with criminal records. The other reason is that they are less concerned with finding actual criminals than they are with filling their arrest quota. Stephen Miller, Trump‘s Deputy Chief of Staff, has set a daily arrest quota of 3000 a day. Presenting evidence to a judge to obtain a warrant is time consuming and will keep you from reaching your quota. Much easier to put on your mask and gun, then head out and grab people based on the color of their skin.

This is not justice; it’s how fascism starts. Please call your reps and ask them to stand up against ICE.
